Last November, artists and _gaia members, Christine DaCruz and Doris Caçoilo, exhibited photography and site-specific installations in response a recent visit to Nicosia, Cyprus. Specifically, an area called the Buffer Zone, or the "Dead Zone." The Dead Zone refers to the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus which runs for more than 112 miles along what is known as the Green Line. The zone partitions the island of Cyprs into a southern area effectively controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, and the northern area controlled by the Turkish army. Some 10,000 people live in the "Dead Zone."
Honestly, for a show called "DEAD ZONE," the opening was pretty lively! Check out these photos, courtesy of _gaia Studio. [All our photos are courtesy of _gaia and/or _gaia members.])
